# Account health

> Read your margin surplus and know what each threshold means

Your account's health is its margin surplus: what your collateral is worth, minus what your
positions require. See [Margin math](/risk/margin-math) for the formula.

## Read it

[`GET /v1/positions?subaccount_id=N`](/api-reference/endpoint/positions) reports it under
`futures_account`:

| Field | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `im_surplus_usd` | Surplus over initial margin, in USD |
| `mm_surplus_usd` | Surplus over maintenance margin, in USD |

Both are read from chain. A missing field means the venue could not read it, not zero.

## What each state means

| State | What you can do |
| - | - |
| `im_surplus_usd` ≥ 0 | Trade freely. |
| `im_surplus_usd` \< 0, `mm_surplus_usd` ≥ 0 | Reduce positions only. Trades that add risk are refused. |
| `mm_surplus_usd` \< 0 | The account can be [liquidated](/risk/liquidation). |

## Stay healthy

* **Watch the mark.** Variation margin moves with every [mark](/markets/mark-price-and-bounds) update.
* **Hold USDC.** cNGN counts at half its value, and a depeg raises initial margin.
* **Top up before you need to.** A [deposit](/api-reference/endpoint/deposits) to an existing
  subaccount raises both surpluses.
* **Reduce early.** A `reduce_only` order is held only to maintenance margin.
